What is a Safe Haven horse?

These are our long-haulers. The ones that have asked to go no further and no longer change hands. The ones that hurt. Or need to heal. These are the herd members that stay with us. We are their safe place to land.

We have at least 10 horses in our Safe Haven herd. The reasons are many and the needs can be high. We promise to keep them forever or as long as they want to be with us. With your help we can ensure this space and care for them and still be able to bring in rescues to be adopted out. We need to be able to do both.

You can sponsor any member of our Safe Haven herd. This funding goes directly to their lifetime care with 3 Sisters Equine Refuge.

Why Support Our Safe Haven Horses?

The base cost for a horse in our Safe Haven herd is approximately $325-350 a month.

These horses often need medications, specialty foot care, particular feed protocols and continued vet care. The rehab or stabilization of these special horses can drive the monthly cost up, not to mention rising feed costs.

Our Safe Haven herd numbers range from about 8-11 horses, making our continued fundraising efforts for this very deserving population to over $30K! This is a big goal, but important one. This money not only benefits these forever-safe horses, but securing funds also allows us to take in and plan for more adoptable rescues.

Breakdown of costs where help is needed:

  • Yearly Care: $3,522 covers basic care for a year which includes hay, minerals, Vit E, Flax, salt, farrier, annual exam, wormer.

  • Monthly Care: $252 covers basic care for a month which includes hay, minerals, Vit E, Flax, salt, farrier.

Dutch

Dutch is a friesian who has a progressive disease called Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis (DSLD). DSLD is a progressive and potentially painful condition leading to the chronic breakdown of tendons and ligaments in the horse. Dutch wears special hind shoes that support and distribute his weight to give some relief to the tendons. He also is on supportive nutrition and a daily dose of Equioxx for pain management.

We monitor Dutch’s quality of life often to be sure he is living his best life as the king horse of Varekai Ranch!

Sam

Any of our bestest friends and supporters know our ole man Sam! Sam was abandoned in the desert, and a day away from death by starvation when we set out to find him and bring him into our care. That was a couple years ago and just look at him now!

Sam has an ole-man attitude and is the king of his own paddock, eating about 15 lbs of senior a day, slopping it up with what few teeth he has left! He is really one of our favorite comeback stories!

Sam is the oldest in our Safe Haven herd and we believe he deserves that kind of forever.
